How many international students study in Australia?
Australia is a popular study destination for students from all over the world who want a high-quality education. Each year many new international students enrolled in Australian courses, adding to an already large international student population across the country.
The Australian Government requires all overseas students studying in Australia to take out Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC). Overseas students will be required to provide confirmation that they have undertaken OSHC to cover the period of their studies.
In which fields of education do international students’ study?
The majority of international students in Australia are studying in the higher education sector, followed by the vocational education and training (VET) sector, the English Language Intensive Courses for Overseas Students (ELICOS) sector and the school sector.
Data shows that ELICOS continues to provide a popular pathway for international students into the VET and higher education sectors. Research shows that 30% of international students starting higher education courses have previously studied in the ELICOS sector, while 37% of international students starting vocational education and training courses have done so through the ELICOS route.
Foundation courses are also growing in popularity, with enrolments increasing by 16% per year.
